If you have ever wanted to make margaritas but didn’t know where to begin, I have good news for you…they are waaaay easier than you’d think. You don't need exotic ingredients or fancy techniques.
These margaritas are so good and so easy to mix up. If you know how to use an electric juicer, you can make 'em.
They’re made from a simple combination of fresh squeezed fruit juices, tequila, and sweetened with a bit of honey. So they’re about as natural as you can get. I call them Sugar Free Margaritas, even though technically honey is a natural sugar. But ya know, details shmee-tails.
We have my awesome husband to thank for this one, friends. A couple of years ago he wanted to surprise me with a drink for a Friday night in, and he came across this recipe. Because we appreciate fresh squeezed juice, natural (unprocessed) sweeteners, and recipes that call for as few ingredients as possible, he ended up using that recipe merely as a jumping off point for developing this recipe into what it is today. "Our" recipe, if you will.
These classic margaritas quickly became a staple in our house. We made them almost every weekend the summer of 2012. No joke. We affectionately dubbed that “The Year of the Margarita.” Travis even crafted me this ornament to commemorate them that Christmas:
Of all of the ornaments we have made for each other, that one might be my favorite. I laughed so hard and so long when I opened it up on Christmas morning. It still makes me smile when I see it.
I hope you give this a try, guys. Margaritas might be one of the simplest drinks that people are too intimidated to make. Which is really a shame. They are so tasty and such a crowd pleaser.
Homemade Sugar Free Margaritas
- 2 Cups fresh squeezed lime and grapefruit juices (from about 6-7 limes and 1 large grapefruit)
- 2 Cups of Tequila
- About 2 Tablespoons honey
- 5 Cups cubed ice
- 1 Cup water
- A citrus juicer
- Large measuring cup
- Cutting board
- Pitcher & stirrer
1. Cut the limes and grapefruit in half.
2. Set up the large measuring cup right underneath the spout of the juicer.
3. Squeeze the juice from them using an electric juicer. I like to start with the grapefruit...
4. And follow with the limes.
5. Keep squeezing until you have 2 cups of fruit juice.
6. Add about 2 tablespoons of honey.
7. Add 2 cups of Tequila.
8. Stir it up until the honey breaks down and dissolves so that it's no longer visible on the bottom of the cup.
9. Toss the ice into the pitcher.
10. Pour in the mixture of fruit juice, tequila, and honey.
11. Add about a cup of water.
12. Stir it up and give it a taste. You can add a little more honey now if it’s a little too sour. (The honey takes a little longer to dissolve at this point because the liquid is so cold, but just keep stirring and eventually the acidity will break it down.)
If it tastes a little too Tequila-y at this point, you can either add another ½ Cup- 1 Cup of water now or wait until the flavors marry and the ice melts a bit. I like to pop the pitcher into the fridge for a couple of hours and let it come together before I decide if it needs any additional water.
Shelf life: This keeps very well in the fridge for up to 12 hours, so long as it’s in an airtight container. After that, it starts to lose some of the pizazz. If left uncovered in the fridge, try to drink it up within 6-8 hours.
Substituting fruit juices: You may be thinking, “But I don’t like grapefruit.” Don’t let that stop you from trying this recipe as is. My husband doesn’t like grapefruit either and he loves this drink. Probably because the grapefruit juice merely adds a subtle layer of flavor for the lime juice to play off of. It doesn’t actually taste like itself, if that makes sense. Trust me, don’t substitute it. I LOVE lime everything, but the one time we tried this recipe with just lime juice the flavor was flat and boring and just a disappointment.
Fresh squeezed juice: It's the key. It makes everything better. And this recipe is no exception.
Now put a slice of lime, and maybe some salt (if you're into that), on the rim and enjoy!
